Woodland Horse Center's
Competitive Trail Riding Team

The "Trail Team" was created in 2008 by Woodland
instructor Karen Parker for riders interested in Competitive
Trail Riding.  This sport includes Judged Pleasure Riding,
Limited Distance Riding and Endurance Riding.  This sport is
all about being out there and enjoying Mother Nature with
your partner - a great horse.
Notes from Fall 2009 Season

Our Fall activities were limited due to extreme hot weather in August and
busy lives outside the barn for some team members.  However, we got going
in September for practices twice a month and regular weekly rides out on
the trail.

Our goal this year was to participate in the
Nokesville Horse Society Crystal
Crown Series Judged Pleasure Trail Ride.  This ride is held at the Sky
Meadows State Park in Delaplane, Va.  It's a long drive to get there but very
worth doing as the park is beautiful, the trails are fantastic and challenging.

Notes from the 2009 Nokesville Horse Society Crystal
Crown Judged Pleasure Trail Ride (JPTR).

The ride was scheduled for November 1st and was rained out, big time!
The organizers re-scheduled for November 8th and it proved to be a
glorious day!  Although a bit warm for the season, we were thrilled to be
able to go.  This years theme was
"You might be a Redneck".  Obstacle
examples are:

  • If you have your Christmas tree up all year - We had to ride to a
decorated Christmas tree, remove a long strand of silver garland, ride
to another Christmas tree, go around it, return to the first tree and
place the garland back on the branches.

  • If your relatives are sleeping in the back yard - We had to come
between four fake campers on the ground (two on each side), turn
and side-pass from the first one to the second one, step our horse up
to the last camper and halt.

  • If you think long underwear, coveralls and a flannel shirt is a 3-
piece suit - We had to pick up clothes pins from a wobbly bucket,
pull a specific item from the laundry basket, hang the item on the
    clothes line.

Remember - all of the obstacles have to be completed in one minute or
less!  There were ten obstacles in all.

We rode as a team and we all enjoyed the challenges along the way.  Each
member had obstacles that gave them a little trouble but all-in-all we
thought we did very well.  Most important...the horses had a great day out
playing on the trails of Virginia!

The results are in!  How thrilling!  We placed!!

Robin Bruckner - 3rd place in Novice Rider Division I.  Fantastic!
Sue Gething - 6th place in Novice Rider Division II.  Fabulous!
Karen Parker - 5th place in Age Division I,  5th place in Breed Division II.
Stunned!

Jamie did not place but Maverick handled the trailering, ride and obstacles
very well for his first time out.  They should be very proud!

A Note from the Coach to the Team - This team has made me extremely
proud for many reasons.  Everyone was committed to the team effort,
practiced hard and dug deep, cared for their horses in a professional way
and kept a great sense of humor!  I am honored to be a part of our team.
Thank you so much and I can't wait for 2010!
Trail Team Members:

Sue Gething & Dumpling - These two participated in
the all seasons and had a blast!  Sue returns this year
to see if Dumpling can slow down just a little!

Karen Parker & Sampson - Karen is the Trail Team
Coach and participated in the 2008 season and loved
every minute of it.  This year her goal is to better last
years scores and improve the side pass!

Robin Bruckner & Amigo - Robin is a new team
member and Amigo participated in 2008, 2009 and
2010.  Robin loves any excuse to get out on the trail!

Erica Carroll & Aladdin - Erica is out newest member
and she is eager to build a more trusting relationship
with her horse!  And trail ride a lot!!
It was a GREAT day!
Notes form 2010

2010 was a tough year for the team.  We had several members injured, both
horse and human, and Karen had to retire her horse Sampson to ring bone.
Sampson was the teams leader horse and all the others looked to him for
guidance.  Karen is in the process of finding her new trail horse.  Fear
not...we will rebuild and move on!
A Note for 2011

We are all health and we all have great horses to rebuild with.  We have
started working on ground manners and exposing our horses to obstacles
and weird stuff!  Stay tuned...
